By now you have heard about the systematic state oppression of human rights in Russia directed to the LGBT community. At Branded By Sochi we believe that these laws are incompatible with the Olympic promise set out in the Olympic Charter. Because the Olympic Games is a vehicle providing good will and adulation to its hosts, it will be an endorsement and the IOC and sponsors will be indelibly linked to the abuses.
As long as these ‘hateful’ laws stand in Russia, Branded By Sochi is calling for the IOC to change venue city (which is well within the IOC's power, and is a solution that supports the athletes’ aspirations) or face a blanket boycott that includes that of its sponsors. Putin and the Russian Government have taken a vicious line, some are calling it a ‘war on gays’, and it requires a hard line in response.
If you are a member of the LGBT community, a friend of the community, or just believe in the most basic of human rights and dignity, we implore you to support this initiative. Take a look around our site to find out more about the controversy and the role of the Olympics, and then very quickly and easily use our information contact resource, write letters and petition to let the various stakeholders know how you feel.
